The first stage is a driveway assessment. The installer measures the clear opening width, checks the slope and surface condition, and looks at how much side run-back is available. These three factors determine whether a swing gate, sliding gate, or cantilever system is the right fit. A swing gate needs enough arc to open clear of the road or pavement. A sliding gate needs run-back space equal to the gate width plus the motor housing. A cantilever gate needs roughly 50% more run-back than the clear opening, but clears the ground entirely, useful where a ground track would be impractical on an uneven or sloped surface.
Once the gate type is confirmed, groundworks and cable ducting come next. Post foundations are dug and concreted to the depth the gate weight and soil conditions require. Conduit is laid for the power supply and control cable runs, keeping wiring concealed and protected. The electrical supply is run to the control panel and wired to 18th Edition BS 7671 requirements. Where a new supply is needed from the consumer unit, this is scoped and quoted as part of the same job, not treated as a separate trade.
The final stage covers motor fitting, sensor alignment, and safety commissioning. The operator, whether a ram arm, underground actuator, or rack-and-pinion sliding motor, is mounted and connected to the control panel. Photo eye sensors and safety edges are positioned and tested to confirm they stop or reverse the gate on contact or obstruction. The installer then runs the gate through a series of opening and closing cycles, checking limit switch positions, closing force, and remote control response before the system is handed over.
